Anjali Devi, one of the most popular stars of the black and white era celebrated her Sathabhishekam on Saturday. Her relatives, friends and Colleagues from the film industry were there. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi visited the place of Anjali Devi and blessed her.

Born in Peddapuram in Kakinada district on 23th October, 1928, Anjali Devi began acting at the age of eight. Later she performed on stage with Young Man’s Happy Club. She met her husband Adinarayana Rao there and they got married in 1940.

Anjali Devi was introduced to Cinema by C. Pullaiah as Mohini, the heavenly beauty, in ‘Golla Bhama’ film. After that she never looked back. She went on to complete around 400 films as heroine in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi. She paired with all the top stars in the 40s and 50s.

In 1950, Anjali Devi established her own production house Anjali Pictures. Under the banner she launched a bilingual Tamil-Telugu film ‘Paradesi’. Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Anjali Devi played the lead roles and she introduced Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji Ganesan with the film. Another legend introduced by Anjali Devi in ‘Paradesi’ was the versatile SV Ranga Rao.

In Tamil Anjali Devi is still a legend. Anjali Devi was always in the big league of actors with films like, Mangayarkarasi, Adutha Veettu Penn, Penn, Kanavane Kankanda Theivam, Manalanae Mangayin Bakiam, Adithan Kanavu which were all block busters of the times. Her films with MGR, Marmayogi, Sarvadhikari and Gulebagavali are cherished movies even today. She was also the mother of Rajinikanth in ‘Annai Ou Aalayam’.

A great devotee of Sathya Sai Baba, Anjali Devi symbolizes the golden era of Tamil and Telugu cinema.

Shahukar Janaki’s history in cinema spans by over 385 films in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam languages. The yesteryear actress debuted in the Telugu movie ‘Shahukaaru’ with NT Rama Rao, produced by Vijaya Productions. Even before her stint in movies, she was a radio jockey for Telugu programs at a tender age of 11. Being a stage artist, she has performed in 300 shows in India and abroad. One of it was her performance for Tana in two Telugu plays scripted by actor Murali Mohan.

Janaki’s cognomen came with the Telugu hit ‘Shahukar’ which got her wide accolades and the name ‘Shahukar’ Janaki. The actress has acted alongside top heroes like A Nageswar Rao, NTR, Jaggaiah in Telugu and with MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan in Tamil. She also did about ten movies with the Kannada superstar Dr. Raj Kumar and many other actors.

Her best performance glittered on screen in the direction of Veteran director K Balachandar with movies like ‘Iru Kodugal’, ‘Ethir Neechal’, ‘Bama Vijayam’ among a few others. For a period of time, she was a part of the Jury for the National Film Awards committee and as the chair person for the State Telugu Film awards committee. An ardent devotee of Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, the kind hearted thespian has helped the less privileged people in her vicinity.

The veteran actress who is a recipient of the honorable Kalai Maa Mani title celebrates her 77th birthday today on December 2nd.

In reverence: Tamil superstar Rajinikanth seeks blessings of Satya Sai Baba at Prashanti Nilayam in Puttaparthi on Sunday.

ANANTAPUR: Tamil film superstar Rajinikanth, who arrived in at Puttaparthi in the district on Saturday evening, had darshan and blessings of Satya Sai Baba on the Tamil New Year Day on Sunday in the spiritual town.

Rajinikanth presented a bouquet to Sai Baba before seeking his blessings during the morning gathering in Sai Kulwanth Auditorium in Prashanti Nilayam.

He also participated in the ‘bhajan’ programme till afternoon. Clad in a cotton shirt and dhoti the tinsel town crowd-puller was seated beside Sai Baba during the morning darshan programme.

He left for Bangalore in the afternoon by car. Earlier on Saturday evening he arrived at Puttaparthi and stayed in Shanti Bhavan guest house. A large number of devotees from Tamil Nadu and other parts of the country gathered there for celebrating Tamil New Year in the abode of Sai Baba.

Jackie Shroff, who plays spiritual leader Sai Baba in a forthcoming movie has quit smoking and drinking to get into the skin of the character. Jackie, who is also an ardent follower of the spiritual guru, said: “Now I feel as if Baba is guiding me in the film and I am only following his instructions.”

Actor Jackie Shroff, who has worked in nearly 150 films and played diverse roles, now plays spiritual leader Sai Baba in a forthcoming movie. And he even quit smoking and drinking to get into the skin of the character.

“I have quit smoking and drinking for the last one-and-a-half years and plan to continue with it in the future too,” Jackie told IANS.

The actor has also turned completely vegetarian.

“I did not have the habit of eating non-vegetarian food much, but I have stopped it completely now,” Jackie said.

Jackie, who has played a cop with élan in many films, admits that he was initially apprehensive about getting into the role of the spiritual guru for the film titled Malik Ek. But director Deepak Balraj Vij was adamant about casting him.

“Initially, when he had approached me with the project, I did not agree as I thought playing Sai Baba would not be possible for me.

“But the constant persuasion from the director made me say yes and then I never looked back,” said Jackie, who won the Filmfare best actor award for his performance in Parinda (1989).

Jackie, who is also an ardent follower of the spiritual guru, said: “Now I feel as if Baba is guiding me in the film and I am only following his instructions.”

Malik Ek is slated for an October release.

Jackie is also working in Sohail Khan Productions Kisaan, where he will be seen as a Sikh farmer. The film also stars Sohail Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Nauheed Cyrusi and Dia Mirza.
