Satya SaiBaba In A Wheelchair

Years before Sathya Sai Baba ever got into a wheelchair, he revealed this event to many people through dreams. As a matter of fact, the author had three dreams of Sathya Sai Baba in a wheelchair about seven years before the Guru ever got into one. The author was also told by several other devotees they had similar dreams as well.

Sathya Sai Baba moved fully, freely and tirelessly up until the year 2003, at the ripe age of 77 when he had a hip fracture and after which he could be seen using a wheelchair. Strange enough, Sathya Sai Baba’s physical condition actually embarrassed some “devotees” because their Guru was using a wheelchair! Others had doubts about Sathya Sai Baba’s divinity or Godhood based on his physical condition. In a certain sense, Sathya Sai Baba’s use of a wheelchair has served to further separate the “grain from the chaff” among his devotees.

When visiting Shirdi, the author took a tour of the Sai Baba temple and viewed a room that stored Sai Baba’s belonging. In that room was a wheelchair (which is rarely mentioned in Sai paraphrenalia). In several pictures and paintings of Sai Baba, one can see devotees holding Sai Baba up and assisting him to walk. At one point, Sai Baba of Shirdi was completely bed-ridden. Yet what is the status of Shirdi Sai Baba today? The Sai Baba of Shirdi is a world-renowned Saint. His reputation is ever-increasing and ever-expanding despite the fact that he had a wheelchair, required assistance to walk and was bed-ridden later in his life. The Shri Sai Satcharita said the following about Sai Baba:

“From this and other accounts, let the readers consider whether Sai Baba was the three and a half cubits body that He occupied for some years and that He left thereafter or He was the Self inside. The body, composed of the five elements is perishable and transient, but the Self within is the thing – Absolute Reality which is immortal and intransient. The pure Being, Consciousness or Brahma, the Ruler and Controller of the senses and mind is the thing Sai. This pervades all things in the universe and there is no space without it. For fulfilling His mission He assumed the body and after it was fulfilled, He threw away the body (the finite aspect), and assumed His infinite aspect.”

It is also to be noted that spiritual masters and avatars have also been subjected to many earthly ordeals. Jesus was nailed to a cross. Krishna (considered a poorna-avatar) “died” as the result of an arrow piercing his foot. The Buddha “died” from food poisoning. The prophet Mohammed “died” from food poisoning. Lord Rama “died” by taking Jala Samadhi (drowning) in the Sarayu River. Ramana Maharshi and Ramakrishna “died” from cancer. Nevertheless, all religions do not focus so much on the physical conditions or earthly departures of these divine personalities as they do on their messages, miracles, inspiration, love and teachings.

Prof. Prem Luthra said in the book “God Lives In Prashanti Nilayam”:

How fortunate we are to have Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba moving among us and showering his Love and Grace by giving us darshan, sparshan and sambhashan. But due to his ‘maya’ we are sometimes deluded to think that He is a human being like any one of us. But Swami Himself keeps warning is against committing such mistake. This phenomenon is not new.

In the previous yugas also most of the people failed to recognise the Avatarhood of Rama and Krishna during their stay in the human form. In this Kaliyuga it is all the more difficult to distinguish the Avatar from the false gods who, with “outer signs of sainthood, the long gown, the beard, the rosaries, the matted hairs” moving about India and abroad misleading the people. It is very difficult to demarcate clearly the manifestation of the Lord. It is therefore, Swami says, “I am announcing Myself, and Myself describing My Mission, the Task, the characteristics, the qualities which mark out the Avatar from the rest.”

Moreover, it is impossible for man to understand the mystery of the Avatar unless He Himself reveals it to us. Baba, in His Divine Love, Compassions and Mercy fro us all, has been revealing from time to time His mystery and mission through His Miracles and His Divine Declarations made during His discourses, “If I don’t tell you about Myself, who can?” He speaks. He declares that His devotees can tell anyone in the world with full confidence and faith that “Lord is here is the Prashanthi Nilyam”.

Mysterious are the ways of the Yuga Avatar Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. He is Omnipotent, Omnipresent and Omniscient. There is no work that He cannot do by just willing it. But he gets things done through us by making us His instruments to give us ananda.

Sathya Sai Baba has also talked about his physical condition:

Sathya Sai Baba: My health is very good. Real health is not related to the body. As you equate Swami with this physical frame, it appears as though Swami is not well. Yad bhavam tad bhavati (as is the feeling, so is the result). Do not identify Me with this physical body. I am not Dehaswarupa (body), I am Dehi (the indweller). I have all powers in Me. But you are deluded, seeing My physical form. As a matter of fact, there is no trace of ill-health in Me. I am always healthy. I can do whatever I want. But those who go by the physical form think that Swami is aging. Youth and old age are related to the body and not to Me. I am always the same. I can do anything. If you think that Swami is strong and healthy, yes so He is. There is no weakness in Me. My angas (limbs) may appear to be weak. But I am not angaswarupa, I am Atmaswarupa. Wherever you may go, worship God as Atmaswarupa. Do not identify Him with an akara (form). Give up body consciousness and develop Atmic awareness. Only when you lead a spiritual life will you be able to visualise the Atmaswarupa. If you identify Me with the body, I cannot walk even two steps. Do not think about the akara. Have faith that I am the Atmaswarupa. Then I will always remain healthy.

Sathya Sai Baba is a world-renowed and highly respected Spiritual teacher and humanitarian despite the fact that he uses a wheelchair and requires assistance walking. The most intriguing aspect about Sathya Sai Baba’s current physical condition is how he revealed his use of a wheelchair to many people in dreams years before he ever got into one.

Despite using a wheelchair, numerous miracles and manifestations associated with Sathya Sai Baba are still reported on an international scale (even up to the present day).

  1. Swami gave me a dream in early 1997 in which He was in a wheelchair and very old. He did not look good, but the worse he looked the more beautiful His eyes became. If anyone is having a crisis of faith or embarrassment over this then they seriously need to get a crucifix and take a good look! A group of us gather monthly to chant the Gayatri 1008 times for Swami. Thanks for posting this!

  2. I had been to puttaparthi on 12th sept 2008 with my family members after a long gap of almost ten years. I felt deeply sad to see my dear lord in the wheel chair. After returning from puttaparthi also my mind was haunted by the scene I had in puttaparthi. I was thinking that why he should be in wheel chair when he can walk the instant he wishes? For one week my mind was perturbed. One night I got a dream that he came walking towards the mandir. He went inside the garbha gudi and sat in the posture of Shri Shirdi Saibaba. I was delighted to see this dream and I told the same to my family members. I am sure that he will walk to make all of us happy.

  3. I also saw Swami after long years & in a wheelchair. Honestly the only surge of emotions I felt was a sense of homecoming, gratitude & love. Felt charged to get active in the Seva Organisation activities and put into practice His message.

  4. I am not affiliated with Sathya Sai Baba so i cant speak on visions received by his devotees. It makes me wonder though, what particular followers have been learning considering the main focus in all spiritual masters teachings is ”I am not the body, mind, ego”. Devotees losing faith in their Guru because of his physical condition? It sounds like some members of your community have missed the point entirely. Keep your faith people, the body may suffer and deteriorate, in fact it must, however the guru never suffers. His connection with the divine will remain constantly regardless of outer circumstances and the stream of love and compassion will continue to flow through him to all those whom keep him in their hearts. God bless…

  5. I wonder if the people maligning Sai at every chance possible are doing it simply because their higher consciousness cannot accept that God cannot exist in the human form. But then, if you can believe that a human form can grow inside a mothers womb, why not this? Anyway, in the heart of true devotees, articles maligning His name are only for leisure reading. The depths of divinity cannot be gauged or questioned and there are no answers that can scientifically satisfy the same. Devotion to some people can seem illogical but nevertheless it is the lifeblood for many.
